An Analysis Of Pragmatic Strategies Of Online Debate Programs

Let's Talk is the entertaining product of debate, which presents debate to the public in the form of variety show. It makes the tedious debate lively and interesting, and at the same time, some distinctive business elements are also added. It broke the serious stereotype of regular debate. Besides, the program form is innovative with debaters of hugely different personalities using bold words. The debate topics of Let's Talk are from problems young people most concerned about or very controversial issues. The debate process is very exciting and full of jokes,which is of distinctive variety show color and very hot among the audience.Based on the pragmatic strategies, this paper takes the 24th edition of the Third Season of Let's Talk as the corpus, analyzing the language features and pragmatic strategies of the host, honored guests and debaters in Let's Talk through the combination of quantitative analysis and qualitative analysis, trying to reveal the mechanism of pragmatic strategies to further analyze the factors that affect the choice and use of pragmatic strategies.This paper is divided into five chapters:The first chapter is the introduction, which briefly introduces the research status, the research significance,the research method,the source corpus,and features of the online debate program Let's TalkThe second chapter mainly analyzes the micro-pragmatic strategies of the discourse subject, that is, narrator's strategies. From the language elements, the micro-pragmatic strategies analyzes the speaker in sound, stress and pause and other aspects of voice rhetoric strategies, and explains the use of vocabulary rhetorical strategies such as spoken words, folk adages, idioms, hedges. Finally, it reveals the speaker's adoption of rhetoric strategies such as reference, imitation, exaggeration, questioning, parallelism in order to achieve a certain pragmatic purpose.The third chapter mainly analyzes the use of macro-pragmatic strategies in discourse subjects, is communicative strategies. This chapter analyzes pragmatic strategies used by the host and debater for different purposes from the speaker's perspective. The host's pragmatic strategies include control strategy, humor strategy, guidance strategy and speech impoliteness strategy, etc. The pragmatic strategies of the debater can be divided into four kinds according to the pragmatic purpose, namely, the vocabulary pragmatic strategy, opponent attack pragmatic strategy, self-defense pragmatic strategy and the third-party ingratiation pragmatic strategy. At the same time, in order to take into account the entertainment effect of the program, the debater usually make funny or exaggerated expression and action in the debate, so the paper will also analyze the debater's body language strategies.The fourth chapter mainly reveals the mechanism of pragmatic strategies, analyzes the use factors of pragmatic strategies, and summarizes the use of pragmatic strategies according to the effect of pragmatic strategies, under the guidance of purpose-intention principle.The fifth chapter is the conclusion, which mainly summarizes the main conclusions and limitations of this paper, and puts forward some suggestions for future research.
