An Exploration Of The Dynamic Adaptation Of Impolite Speeches In Constructing Speakers' Pragmatic Identity

Identity and identity construction are important issues in social science research.The identity of language users is fundamentally a process of communication,in which the social and cultural contexts influences the construction of identities by means of language.The identity constructing in specific context is defined as pragmatic identity.It is dynamic and could be constructed.As a violation of the language norms,impolite speeches also contribute to constructing the interlocutors' pragmatic identity dynamically in verbal communication,in which the effective integration of interdisciplines fully reflects the influence of non linguistic factors on language use.This thesis analyzes the impolite speeches of the hot American teleplay Desperate Housewives(season eight).It takes Verschueren's adaptation theory as the theoretical framework,combining the core idea of pragmatic identity theory.The study explores three questions: Firstly,what are the language features of impolite speeches? What communication strategies are reflected in these impolite speeches?Secondly,what characteristics can be observed in the dynamic adaptation of pragmatic identity construction in the selected impolite speeches? Thirdly,what are the positive functions of pragmatic identity construction in impolite communication?The study aims at explaining the construction of pragmatic identity in impolite communication adapts to the mental,physical and social factors,which reflects a dynamic feature.Through analyzing the data of Desperate Housewives,the author finds that as a pragmatic strategy for the purpose of achieving a specific communicative purpose,impolite speeches can be expressed in the form of language and transmitted by the content of discourse.There could be several kinds of realizations of impoliteness by analyzing the corpus in Desperate Housewives,such as negative speeches,negative evaluated speeches,taboo words,sarcastic speeches,minatory speeches,and so on.Then,the author analyzes the selected corpus carefully,discovers that the factors such as the speakers' character,emotions,gender,race or power,and even time or place of the communication,could influence his or her choice of language.The impolite speeches they choose,will directly affect the construction of speakers' power identity,interpersonal identity and emotional identity,and ultimately affect the communicative effect.Finally,the author summarizes the positive functions of impolite speeches in pragmatic identity construction.Constructing an identity with impolite speeches has the function of performing characters,releasing emotion and entertainment.The author hopes that impolite speeches could be used better and lead to a better communicative intent on the basis of the above findings.
