Analysis Of Interpreter’s Neutrality With Reference To Geoffrey Leech’s Politeness Principle

The thesis discusses interpreter’s neutrality by analyzing the definition of interpreter’s neutrality,the factors influencing interpreter’s neutrality and the ways to better achieve interpreter’s neutrality.The thesis firstly analyzes the definition of interpreter’s neutrality based on the relevant theories developed by different scholars and summarizes them with emphasis on the existence of interpreter’s own thinking or self-awareness.Then it puts forward and specifically elaborates on two major factors that influence interpreter’s neutrality and are within the control of interpreters by referring to the previous studies and a questionnaire that helps select the major and controllable factors from all the influencing factors.With further study in interpreter’s neutrality,the thesis finds that the two aforementioned factors can in a degree be limited if interpreters consciously and appropriately apply Geoffrey’s politeness principle(hereinafter referred to as PP),in this way,interpreter’s neutrality can be better promoted.At the end of the thesis,examples from real-time interpreting practice that applies PP to reduce the influence of the factors are given to validate the argument and to show strategies of really putting it into use.The thesis is innovative in the following ways: it proves the possibility of achieving interpreter’s neutrality,in contrast,many studies,no matter in which way they are analyzed,have prove that neutrality does not exist and have set interpreter’s awareness against their neutrality.Another point worth mentioning is the thesis combines the research of interpreter’s neutrality with PP,moreover,it concludes that interpreter’s neutrality can be in a degree promoted with the reference of PP,which is the third point this thesis tries to make.
