The thesis attempts to analyze Zhang Ling's Chinese version of The Well of Loneliness with feminist translation theory as the theoretical framework. It intends to explore how Zhang Ling's feminist consciousness is manifested. Additionally, it aims to verify the applicability of feminist translation theory in the homosexual literary translations. The scope of translation studies is broadened to the cultural level since the cultural turn in the 1970s, thus feminist translation theory arouses tremendous attention and also provides a brand new perspective for translation studies. Feminist translation rewrites the text from the perspective of gender. Therefore, Flotow summarizes three common feminist interventionist strategies which are prefacing and footnoting, supplementing and hijacking.Feminist translation theory not only subverts traditional translation concepts but also redefines relationship between the originals and translations. In addition, it pays more attention to translator's subjectivity in the translation and manifests feminist consciousness and identity. As one of eminent female translators, Zhang Ling is inclined to select women writers'works. As the first lesbian novel in the English literature, The Well of Loneliness attracted controversy after its publication. The writer, Radclyffe Hall furnished her own experiences in the work. She assailed the patriarchal society for exclusion and humiliation towards lesbians, whereby showed her strong feminist ideas. According to previous studies on Gu Ji Shen Yuan (??????),it turned out that hardly any of them is from the perspective of translation. Hence, feminist translation phenomenon in the translation is worth studying. What interventionist strategies does Zhang Ling employ in her Chinese version? How does she manifest feminist consciousness? Therefore, under the framework of feminist translation theory, this thesis will discuss Zhang's version with qualitative approach mainly. At the beginning of this thesis, the research background, the significance, research questions and layout of the thesis will be sketched. After reviewing current state of the studies on feminist translation theory, Zhang Ling and her translated version, this thesis makes a tentative study based on feminist translation theory. After the analysis of the details, major findings can be concluded like: (1) feminist translation theory is feasible to the analysis and the practice of homosexual novels. (2) Under the influence of ideology and cultural background, Zhang Ling exerts three feminist interventionist strategies flexibly to manipulate the text. However, she tends to deal with the translation in a mild and soft way.(3) This is a constructive study for the further researches of Zhang Ling's translations or any other feminist translations and also The Well of Loneliness in the future.Nevertheless, due to limited time and length of the thesis, this study cannot get much further nor more comprehensive topics. Therefore, some defects are there to be perfected and improved.
