| International news,as an integral part of superstructure and ideology,is an important channel for people to get informed of events around the world.Ever since China's implementation of policy of reform and opening up,news translation in journalism has drawn more and more attention.Reference News,a daily newspaper enjoying the largest circulation in China,is published by Xinhua News Agency,China's state official news agency.It translates news from major foreign press into Chinese and covers topics including politics,economy,military,science and technology,sport,culture as well as responses or reactions towards China's policies from a foreigner's perspective.Yet,Reference News doesn't simply present foreign news as it is.Instead,it provides the Chinese readers with news that has been adapted when the original versions are too lengthy or inappropriate for secondary transmission.Although the translation and adaptation of news have been a growing study focus both at home and abroad,it has not been studied comprehensively from the perspective of Systemic Functional Linguistics(SFL).And Reference News,as a state released authoritative newspaper,enjoys an essential state in China and provides valuable research material from both translation and discourse analysis perspectives.Therefore,the thesis aims at a functional analysis of news translation and editing on Reference News.Adopting M.A.K.Halliday's systemic functional linguistics,three meta-functions in particular,as the theoretical framework,this thesis selects seven news pieces from the “South China Sea” issue and seven more from economic sector in Reference News and studies the micro-structural features of the adapted news texts by contrasting them with their source texts.Additionally,a comparison between reports on issues of political,military and social,economic fields are compared.The reports on South China Sea issue and on China's economic issues(China's domestic economic situation and Yuan's entering the IMF Reserve Market),from July to October,are chosen as the material to be analyzed and compared.Through research,it is found out that ideology does cast influence on the adaptation of news in Reference News and the influence on political,military news pieces are more prominent over that on economic ones;translators and editors adopt various translation techniques at the word,sentence and text levels to realize certain ideologies and influence the readers. |
