A Study Of Culturally-loaded Words And Expressions In C-E Conference Interpretation:Based On Cultural Schema

During the period of annual two sessions,speeches delivered by state leaders involve loads of culturally-loaded words and expressions,such as poems,idioms,slang,proverbs and political terms.Those official occasions are quite important for foreign media and people to have an opportunity to know more about China.Thus,misinterpretation and misunderstanding should be avoided as much as possible.However,for those interpreters,much burden and responsibility are shared by them.Interpreters are constantly faced with different kinds of culturally-loaded words and expressions and it is quite challenging to have a quick and accurate rendering given limited time and resources.Therefore,it is necessary to have a research on interpretation of those culturally-loaded words and expressions.Cultural schema is a relatively new branch generating from content schema in schema theory.Cultural schema refers to cultural knowledge stored in the human brain.This thesis explains content of cultural schema,definition of culturally-loaded words and expressions,application of cultural schema in interpretation of culturally-loaded words and expressions,four corresponding relationship of Chinese and English cultural schema,namely absence,conformity,cross-matching and conflict of cultural schema and analyzes three possible factors causing those discrepancies including ecological environment,thinking mindset,linguistic habits and religious belief.The author selects and analyzes cases from state leaders' remarks during two sessions(NPC and CPPCC)from 2004 to 2016 and discusses possible strategies to tackle interpretation of culturally-loaded words and expressions based on analysis of chosen cases and cultural schema,namely zero introduction,introduction and adjustment of cultural schema.
