Philip Roth is one of the most outstanding writers in contemporary American literary world. The American Trilogy, which he produced at the end of the last century, represents a significant transition in his more than fifty years' writing career. However, studies on the novels' Neo-realistic tendency remain inadequate. In American Trilogy,Roth aesthetically represents the turbulent society of postwar America and the alienated relationship among modern people through narrating the disillusionment of common people's American dream.Based on Newark, the typical circumstance,Roth portrays typical characters of modern times through applying stream of consciousness to reveal their plentiful inner world.Furthermore, the adoption of modern and postmodern writing techniques serves to deepening themes and enriching characters. Therefore, this thesis concludes that based on the reproduction of social reality and the portraiture of typical characters,American Trilogy develops a Neo-realistic tendency through the application of modern and post-modern writing techniques.American Trilogy is another transcendence in Philip Roth's literary career.Roth's creative tendency to Neo-realism conforms to the trend of the times and at the same time establishes him as one of the most important realistic writers in contemporary time.
