With the rapid development of the Internet, people have an easier access to social media and can express their opinions and feelings free online. It is undeniable that Network Language Violence(NLV,for short)has become a common phenomenon.NLV is an inappropriate conduct of netizen using provocative, offensive, insulting, discriminative or threatening language to attack someone online, which may negatively influence his or her normal life,or to a more severe degree, cause psychological or mental harm. This kind of conduct starts raising concern among people and the government, which not only needs us to improve our moral and Legal Awareness(LA,for short),but also the government to legislate against this phenomenon. With the start of wanting to know the prevailing phenomenon of NLV and its bad social influence, the author tries to focus on NLV among college students, the correlation between NLV and LA,and the language features and applied pragmatic strategies of NLV among college students. From literature review, the author finds that the study of NLV from the perspective of pragmatics is a rather new and innovative angle.Since college student is one of the main groups of China's netizens, this thesis intends to study the correlation between NLV and LA among college students from a pragmatic angle. In order to make this study more convincing,a quantitative and qualitative research method is adopted to find out the answer of the three research questions:(1)the features and applied pragmatic strategies of college students' NLV;(2)the present condition of NLV and LA among college students;(3)the correlation between college students' present condition of NLV and LA.With regard to the first research question,500 online comments of college students are collected to establish a corpus and 63 of them are identified as violent network language. From the corpus,it is found that college students' NLV has the features of(1)using abbreviation,(2)using emotion icon and(3)using derogatory terms, and words of curse, personal abuse and threatening. From the perspective of pragmatic strategies, the author finds that there are four criticism strategies applied in college students' violent comments, which are(1)bold statement,(2)insult,(3)command and(4)questioning.When it comes to the second and third research question,a quantitative research is carried out through data collection and analysis of 321 questionnaires of college students. And it has come to the conclusion of the last two research questions:(1)The present condition of NLV and LA among college students are optimistic. It means college students have a correct understanding and attitude about NLV,and can well restrain themselves from using violent network language. From the side of college students' LA,the data shows that they have a right legal judgment and emotion toward NLV,and a low legal evaluation on people's awareness of right protection and the government's network legislation and supervision;(2)There is a positive correlation between college students' present condition of NLV and LA.After Pearson correlation analysis of the data,it is found that college students' present condition of NLV has a positive correlation with their present condition of LA,which means the better college students' present condition of NLV,the better their LA.To sum up,the conclusion reached in this thesis is not an end,but a tentative attempt. There are still a lot of possibilities for the further study of this topic.Although this thesis is inadequate in some aspects, the findings of this thesis can still shed some light on the study of NLV.
