Study Of The Foregrounding Approaches Of English Soft News Headline From The Perspective Of Figure-ground Theory

News is classified into two sorts,hard news and soft news.The hard news is a kind of news about politics,economy,science and technology,whose themes are more serious,ideological,guiding,and intellectual.When audiences read or hear the news,it will produce a delaying payment effect.However,soft news refers to press touching people's emotion,and is written breezily and livelily.It contributes to appealing to audiences' sensory stimulation,reading and hearing interest,and producing an immediate payment effect.Besides,the news headline is the news eyes.It plays a vital role in the whole news.The thesis mainly studies the foregrounding approaches in English soft news headlines from the perspective of Figure-ground theory and chooses twenty-two foregrounding approaches for analysis.Based on the Figure-ground theory in cognitive linguistics,the thesis makes a preliminary research about the foregrounding approaches in English soft news headlines.The study about foregrounding approaches in English soft news headlines from the perspective of Figure-ground theory not only contributes readers to better understand the news reporters' intention and purpose,but also helps the news researchers to study the news headlines from perspective of linguistics.Cognitive linguistics,which is based on our experience,observation of the world and a way of the conceptualized world,is a new subject about researching anthropological linguistics.It can provide us with a new model for recognition and comprehension of the language.And Figure-ground theory,a key concept in cognitive linguistics,widely applies to explain all kinds of language phenomena.Figure as the most prominent part in process of perception is the focus of the attentive system;Ground is a less prominent part in the process of cognition,a reference to highlight Figure.Foregrounding is a stylistic concept and device used for the realization of some expected effect to go against the conventional language pattern and regulation.The author collects over one hundred headlines to analyze in detail foregrounding approaches from some famous press,such as China Daily,New York Times,and Global Times and so on.And the qualitative analysis is applied to the thesis.By analyzing the foregrounding approaches of the English soft news headlines from the perspective of Figure-ground theory,the thesis finds that prominent information in English soft News headlines is realized by means of the deviation and overregularity of the foregrounding approaches,and forms a striking contrast against the background,thus making the news headlines gains prominence and forms Figure in readers' cognition.The foregrounding approaches not only add the beauty to news language and satisfy readers' pursuit of language beauty,but also realize the ideographic function of news headlines and highlight the theme of the news headlines...
