Analysis Of Chicana Cultural Identity Within Sandra Cisneros's Novels

Sandra Cisneros is one of the representative Chicana writers who is still active in the American literary world.She is a poet,writer and activist,she has published several novels and poems.Her numerous awards include American National Book Award,NEA fellowships,MacArthur fellowship,the PEN Center USA Literary Award and other awards.Her works are mainly about the life of the Mexico immigrants in the United States.This thesis selects Cisneros' s most representative three novels:The House on Mango Street,Woman Hollering Creek and Caramelo as the main research object and analysis the problem of Chicana's cultural identity.With the accelerated globalization,cultural identity is a common problem which everyone who lives in foreign culture environment will meet,whether individuals or groups,and Chicana are confronted with the dual identity dilemma.This thesis consists of three parts,including introduction,main body and conclusion.The first part mainly introduces the Chicana literature background;the domestic and foreign research about Sandra Cisneros' s novels;the main research theory and innovation.The main body of this thesis is divided into three chapters: Chapter?mainly discusses cultural identity dilemma that Chicana faces in two aspects.As minority women,they face a double dilemma of race and gender.Chapter ? mainly uses Bhabha's hybrid theory to analysis how Cisneros construct the Chicana cultural identity in her works.Not only the cultural identity of herself she created by writing,but also tried to break the mode of binary opposition both in writing form and writing content,using a hybrid literary form and double cultural perspective to reflect the impact of two cultures.Chapter ? mainly from two aspects to discusses the significance and thinking by Cisneros constructing the cultural identity of Chicana,that is independent female identity and mixed ethnic identity.The purpose that she wants to achieve from her construction is tried to find a balance between Mexico tradition and America culture,to build “The Third Space” and being “The New Mestiza”.The third part summarizes the main content of this thesis,pointed out that when we face to culturaldifferences and identity confusion,we must respect the differences,through consultation and dialogue to solve the problem.
