A Critical Discourse Analysis Of Sino-US News Reports On V-Day Parade

Critical discourse analysis,as a new perspective concerning non-literary discourse analysis,aims to reveal the relationship among ideologies,power and language.Nowadays,news report as one of the important mass-media is welcomed widely by the public.However,for most of the time we just focus on the surface meaning of news reports and fail to notice the social background and environment involved.This thesis collects 38 news reports respectively from New York Times,The Washington Post and China Daily concerning V-Day parade.Guided by Fairclough's three-dimensional model,the news reports about V-Day parade will be given a critical analysis in the thesis.And it can be a more effective way to explain the hidden meaning behind the news discourses.In the stage of description,Halliday's systemic-functional grammar will be taken into consideration.According to the analysis of lexical choice,the usages of lexical words in the two self-built corpora are different.Compared with Chinese news agencies,western news agencies prefer to focus on the relationship between China,Japan and North Korea,which often arouse suspicions among western countries.And Chinese news agencies prefer to focus on the significance of peace.In the stage of interpretation,we can find that news sources of western news reports are usually semi-clear and unclear.However,news sources of Chinese news are clear.So the news reports of western reports are easy to mislead readers.In the stage of explanation,the aspect of military is the important factor for the news reports.V-Day parade can show China's strength of military,also it can arouse worries among western countries,some of which advocate “China Threat Theory”.From the critical analysis of three stages of description,interpretation and explanation,we can see that it is a sharp contrast of ideologies between China and western counties.On the one hand,this thesis can help reader improve the ability of critical reading about news reports and clarify the international relation to resist the invasion of ideology.On the other hand,it will provide the reference for the researches on news discourses of military parade.
