Study On Auxiliary Verbs In Strange Stories From A Chinese Studio

Academia has not reach an unified opinion on scope, standards and grammatical function about auxiliary verbs. This article attempts to do an comprehensive and systematic description about auxiliary verbs in Strange Stories from a Chinese Studio, which is a classical Chinese novel written during in the period of transition from the modern times to the contemporary times. This thesis does detailed research into the 18 auxiliay verbs and offers respective explanations of their grammatical characteristics in order to display the development of Chinese.The thesis is composed of five chapters.In the first part, an introduction to the thesis, which states the value and current situation of the study of Strange Stories from a Chinese Studio. Meanwhile,a test is made on the author and its composing time.I try to formulate my research approach. Also, this part try to make an overall exhibition of the auxiliary verbs, about its name, definition, part of speech and other aspects. Based on the above analysis, in this research will summarize several criteria to define the auxiliary verbs. It divides the auxiliary verbs into three types: possible, wil ing, and responsible. It fixes on the boundaries of each type with meaning as its main criterion.In the second part,the thesis based on the above classification, and try to make detailed analysis and description about the syntactic structure of the auxiliary verbs appearing in the book. The use of each auxiliary verbs is observed with its grammatical characteristics being summed up. Also, thesis will have an observe about the negative forms and conjunction forms.In the third part, the analyze focus on the semantic units of auxiliary verbs---semanteme. The semantemes fall into two categories:the core semantemes and marginal semantemes. Various semantemes of each kinds are analyzed.In the final part, the thesis makes a diachronic comparision between the auxiliary verbs in Strange Stories from a Chinese Studio and Chinese medieval times, through which some changes in the development of auxiliary verbs are figured out. Thus, the features in the use of auxiliary verbs are summarized.
