In linguistic circles the Chinese Serial Verb Construction(SVC)has been taken as an essential issue for a long time.It is known to us that the Chinese SVC is a typical characteristic of Chinese sentences. As one of the hottest and most difficult research problems in modern Chinese, many scholars at home and abroad have researched on the Chinese SVC and achieved their own definitions. Therefore, the author firstly reviews these scholars' points of view in this paper and then tries to give a different definition of the Chinese SVC.Previous studies of the translation of Chinese SVCs mostly start from the analysis of the semantic relations between serial verbs.Different from them, this thesis studies the translation of Chinese SVCs based on event semantics. And a different perspective is applied to analyze the Chinese SVC as well as its translation.Through the application of aspect and eventuality the semantic focus, namely the central sub-event,can be determined more effectively and accurately during the translation. On the basis of event semantics, the author mainly carries on research from the perspective of eventuality and aspect.Theoretically speaking, the whole Chinese SVC can construct a whole event whether its two VPs belong to continuity-expressions or event-expressions.Correspondingly,the two VPs are called sub-event 1 and sub-event 2.Through the analysis of the translation of each smaller sub-type,the author tries to come to a conclusion about the determination method of the central sub-event in the Chinese SVCs composed of two VPs during the translation.Empirically speaking, this thesis takes the book--A Retrospective of Chinese Literature as the case study. All the Chinese examples as well as their translation versions are from the ten literary works picked out from this book.
