Currently,Bougainville island is the only autonomous region in Papua New Guinea.It is also the most distant province that distance from the central government of the Papua New Guinea.In the 1960s-1970 s,when the Pacific decolonization movement period of rapid advance,Papua New Guinea(hereinafter referred to as the "PNG")are faced with the threat of secession.The separation of crisis became the deadliest,the bloodiest,and the most destructive violence in the Pacific area since the World War ?.The island's separatist movement is mainly divided into three stages.The first stage is the beginning of the separatist movement stage(the 1950 s-1980 s): during this period,people of this region mainly by means of peaceful protest,meditation that requires the separation from Papua New Guinea government,but it is still in the control.The second phase is the violence phase(in the late 1980 s-1990 s): at this stage,the region go into chaos.Violence began to appear between Papua New Guinea government and Bougainville Revolutionary Army.Afterwards,Bougainville Revolutionary Army developed internal differentiation,then,resistance army began to cooperate with Papua New Guinea government forces,that makes the violence turn into the internal war of Bougainville Island.The war lasted for nearly 10 years,then both sides struggle to combat,under the assistance of the surrounding countries such as Australia,New Zealand and the United Nations,both sides agreed to a cease-fire finally.The third stage is to return to peace phase(in the late 1990 s,at the beginning of the 21 st century): during this period,the separation towards to peace,the crisis began in 2001 signed the “Bougainville Peace Agreement”.This separatist movement was resolved finally.Bougainville island in history under the influence of colonial power,even after the Papua New Guinea winning the national independence in 1975,this region was still not get rid of the fate of residual colonial power.Due to the Bougainville island and the mainland of Papua New Guinea have lots of differents in geography,cultural tradition,and even have obvious differences in skin color.both sides will surely have many problems in thefuture,how to make both parties resolve contradictions and problems under the premise of keeping peace is worth thinking deeply.
