“Spray Paint Alternation” is one of the most representative case-alternate phenomenon in Japanese(“~ni~o”/“~o~de”).Traditionally,relevant researches on “Spray Paint Alternation” take the “lexical semantic of verbs ” approach. This approach has its problems. The Cognitive Grammar and Construction Grammar have obvious advantages in investigating the problem. However, looking into the case-alternate phenomenon from this perspective also has its deficiency.Exploiting the Cognitive Grammar and Construction Grammar, using both theoretical and empirical methods, the present study carries out its research from four aspects: the classification of “Spray Paint Alternation” Construction and the differences among various semantic interpretations, the construction meaning of “Alternation Construction” and its influence on semantic interpretations of sentences, the relationship between “Alternation Construction” and verb phrases, the Construction's semantic constraints on noun phrases. The major finding of the research are as follows:1.We systematically classify the “Spray Paint Alternation” Construction according to the semantic features of verbs and make a more detailed conclusion of the semantic variances of every type of alternation sentences.Semantic interpretations vary across all the alternation sentences. This serves a forceful evidence for the viewpoint that two structures of the “Spray Paint Alternation” are Constructions with specific meaning and have influence on sentence meaning.2.According to Construction Grammar, the two forms of the “Spray Paint Alternation” can certainly be regarded as Constructions.Cause-Move Construction(“~ni~o”)and Cause-State-changing(“~o~de”)Construction have different meanings, reflecting the difference in cognitive subjects' construal of the event.Meanwhile, because thetwoconstruction' meanings are different, the“o”(a type of case-auxiliary word in Japanese)of themalso have different semantic features. The variances of the construction meanings are the main cause for the meaning variations of the alternation sentences.Focusing on the“o”help us to deeply understand the causes of specific meaning variances.3.The “Alternation Construction” in some ways interacts with verbs. On the one hand,we can determine the type of construction that can be Fused with the verb, depending on the participant role profiled in the frame semantics of verb.On the other hand, different constructions may result in different interpretations of verbs.Sometimes adding the roles that the verbs don't have can bring new meanings to the verbs.4.Because of the different meanings of constructions,“Alternation Construction” may also lay different semantic constraints on noun phrases. The Cause-Move Construction constrains the noun phrases of “ni” and “o” to be a goal?place and something moving, and better to be concrete ones.On the other hand, the Cause-State-changing Construction constrains the noun phrases of “o” and “de” to be something affected and an instrument, while it is comparatively easier to fuse with abstract noun phrases.
