Amy Tan is one of the most popular Chinese-American writers in the 20 th century.Her first book The Joy Luck Club published in 1989 catapulted her into fame overnight.This novel mainly depicts the story of four Chinese mothers and their American born daughters in Chinese-American families from their conflicts to reconciliation.In the story,the emotional entanglements,life condition and ideological change were vividly described.This thesis is intended to analyze the women characters' searching of identity by adopting Homi.K.Bhabha's post-colonial strategy.There are seven parts in this thesis.The first two chapters are introduction to Amy Tan and The Joy Luck Club and research status of this book.The third chapter is theoretical framework.Embodiment of cultural hybridity was talked in the fourth chapter and the pursuit of identity is talked in chapter five.The sixth chapter mainly talked about the construction of double cultural identities.Chapter seven is the conclusion part.After a series of elaborate analyses,the thesis reaches a conclusion that the Chinese Americans can finally confirm their identities although they might experience confusion and disturbance,struggle and rejection.This thesis offers a new perspective to the study of Amy Tan and shed much light on the understanding of cultural identity of the Chinese Americans and other immigrants or ethnic groups with different cultural backgrounds in the context of globalization.
