Study On Gesticulation In Medieval Christian Art Of Europe

In real life,we can treat gesticulation as a kind of language.The role of gesticulation was enlarged in medieval Christian visual arts.As a language gesticulation is aimed at spreading Christianity legibly,as the same time it is endowed symbolize meaning.It symbolized God when shows in visual arts alone as a symbol.If the subject of taking gesture is God,the gesticulation was symbolized holy power.But the subject turns to the followers,the gesticulation is symbolized devout believers or sometimes symbolized God power.Because it,artists love draw hands which are drawed very large and clarity.Not only hands sre drawed very large but also eyes as well.The “Big eyes” style can be retrospected to Ancient Egypt.Whatever are the “big eyes”or “big hands”,they have the same reason behand them which is the same symbol——God.Christian hand gesture has the characteristic of stylization which is same to Buddhist hand gesture.Christian hand gesture is different from Buddhist hand gesture in visual arts but sometimes they are same.What they different is reflected in spreading function,but what they same is shows in visual function.The main function of Medieval Christian gesture is education,so that hand gesture means a lot.It have three basic meanings which are pray,blessing and pointing.The subject of praying is the followers as usual in medieval visual arts;I analyzed three praying hand gustures from different subject of viaual arts to show what differents between whem and the origin are they.The subject of blessing are God or God's disciples.I analyzed three different blessing hand gestures from the same subjects to show the different between them.The function of pointing hand gesture is balance.I tried to show the differents between poing hand gestures in Bayeux tapwstry as which is the classic one to use pointing hand gerture.The style of Medieval arts have the trend of planarity and good at using lines,it pay attention to show the Christianity and didn't like imitating nature.They treat hands as the sign to spread Christianity,just because this,the nuiform art style can lasting as long as ten centuries.
