With the increasingly rapid development of the internet,mode of communication in terms of news report has been undergoing great changes.While scanning online news,netizens can get access to participating in relevant comments wherein verbal impoliteness phenomena are fairly ubiquitous.It can be found that studies on impoliteness in the context of computer-mediated communication(CMC in short)still crawl forward compared with the rapid development of network media.There is a lack of systematic investigation into impoliteness comments occurring in online forums and the criteria by which online impoliteness comments are evaluated evolve to be diversified.In the present thesis,70 pieces of Sina Weibo news and relevant comments are collected and impoliteness comments occurring in 30 of them are selected as data.Impoliteness occurring in the data is roughly categorized on the basis of impoliteness strategies presented by Culpeper(1996)and Bousfield(2008),and Spencer-Oatey's(2002,2008)rapport management theory.Then,it probes into the pragmatic motivations for impoliteness comments and their functions.A questionnaire survey is carried out and SPSS is used to make an analysis of 1000 questionnaires.The interconnections between impoliteness comments and observers' personal backgrounds are tackled.The thesis focuses on tackling the following topics:(1)how many impoliteness strategies are deployed in Sina Weibo news comments and what are they?(2)To what extent do impoliteness comments violate the details of rapport management?(3)What are the pragmatic motivations for impoliteness comments concerning rapport management?(4)What are the pragmatic functions of impoliteness comments?(5)How do people's personal backgrounds relate to their evaluations of impoliteness comments?It is found that(1)nine kinds of impoliteness strategies are employed to make impoliteness comments,including using taboo words,criticism,challenges,threats,sarcasm,negative association,playing a role,using degrading addressing terms,and using emoticons;(2)impoliteness comments damage the rapport in the sense of quality face,social identity face,equity rights and association rights;(3)objectively,the pragmatic motivations for impoliteness comments lie in the anonymity of CMC and controversiality of online news topics;subjectively,the pragmatic motivations are maintaining face,venting feelings,maintaining power,manifesting position and strengthening influence;(4)in terms of impoliteness comments,they have such functions as emotional function,coercive function,entertaining function,solidary function and supervision function;(5)in accordance with the questionnaire results,gender proves to be the initial factor impacting the interviewees' evaluation of impoliteness,and the frequency of their using microblog and whether they participate in microblog comments play parts in their assessments of impoliteness as well.The findings of the present thesis may enrich the studies on impoliteness in the context of CMC,which will extend the research on strategies occuring in impoliteness comments and their pragmatic functions.In the meantime,on the basis of the pragmatic motivations of rapport management,it uncovers the causes of impoliteness and there are certain implications for news agencies to manage news and news comments as well.
