This empirical study explores hu man cognitive m echanisms and discourse s tance projections by conducting a cross-cultural research between Chinese and English Football Commercial Transfer News discourse(FCTND),and by adopting Gibbs' s(2010)embodied view of im age schemas in language use and understanding,as well as three representative branches of stance theory [Biber et al.(1999),Hunston and Thompson(2000),Hyland(2005)].The author, based on both qualitative and quantitative analyses, examines how image schemas are employed and interpreted, and how dif ferent stances are projected through the use of different linguistic resources. The database for analyses comprises 36 pieces of news discourses co llected from famous authoritative sports websites(Sky Sports,The Guardian,Mirror;Sina,Tencent,Sohu). The results show tha t FCTND writer s actively construct their meanings and perspectives by adopting vari ous forms of image schemas, which are grounded on our everyday bodily experience.Discourse cons umers,on the other hand, unconsciously and spontaneously engage them selves in im aginative simulation processes, which are fundamentally embodied in being constrained by past and present bodily experiences,to facilitate their understanding of linguistic information and writers' intentions.Furthermore,FCTND writers em ploy diverse forms of stance m arkers to signify their positions in relation to specif ic events, which serve as ling uistic strategies to establish interpersonal relations between write rs and readers. The results also identify stance projections(individual stances, collective stances)of different stakeholders in football transfer events and sho w what strategies they deploy to achieve their communicative purposes and safeguard their interests. This research is expected to enrich cogni tive studies of sports news discourses and expand the research scope of stance theory, providing insights for human cognition and stance-taking practices, implications for cross-cultural communications and language teachings, and suggestions for sustainable development of China's football industry.
