On The Style Recreation In Fantasy Fiction

Recent years have witnessed the rising of the fantasy fiction,A Song of Ice and Fire: A Game of Thrones.Once published,it immediately swept off the world with its unusual narrative strategy,charismatic characters and delicate language.The bizarre content is no longer the only thing writers pursue in order to create attractive stories.Some trends show that fantasy fiction is also seeking new ways to tell the story,including the specially designed narrative method and figures of speech.They could be considered as style.Style has always been the pivot of the literary study and an inseparable part of translation.However,previous studies on style recreation were comparatively backward.The author of this thesis believes that the literary stylistics would be a better answer to this question.As an intermediary discipline,a linking point between linguistics and literary criticism,literary stylistics puts importance on both linguistic description and interpretation of the aesthetic value.On one hand,linguistics is applied to explore the phenomenon on the text level.On the other hand,the literary criticism is playing an essential role in interpretation and recreation of the style.This thesis adopts the literary stylistic method developed by Leech and Short to the study of style recreation in the book A Song of Ice and Fire: A Game of Thrones.This thesis is composed of five chapters.Chapter One presents the background,aims,methodology of the study and shows the rough layout of study.Then,Chapter Two provides a survey on fantasy fictions including A Song of Ice and Fire: A Game of Thrones and the style recreation from eastern and western perspectives.Next,the theoretical framework is presented.Chapter Three explores the concept of style and literary stylistics.Then the feasibility and necessity to analyze style recreation through stylistic approaches is discussed.Chapter Four begins with the brief introduction of the writer,translators.As the main part,in Chapter Five the analysis will unfold from the perspective of stylistics and focus on two aspects: representation of speech and thought,and the figure of speech.Based on the stylistic analysis,two Chineseversions are compared to see whether the original style has been recreated and effects have been retained through the translation.The last chapter,Chapter Six,serves as the conclusion of the study.Given that the translation of A Song of Ice and Fire: A Game of Thrones is published in recent years,the research on this fiction series is limited.Few researches relate the style translation to A Song of Ice and Fire: A Game of Thrones.Therefore,the thesis is of some significance.
