As an inter-disciplinary study, critical di scourse analysis,or CDA,helps reveal social reality and ideological gap in discourse.Based on Fairclough's threedimensional framework and Halliday's functional grammar, this thesis carries out a critical discourse study on news reports,a t ypical kind of public discourse which are often characterizedas neutral, objective and truthful,to e xposethe intertwined dialectical relationship between ideology and language. At present,China's headline-grabbing economic growth boosts its energy demand, which inevitably concerns the t ouchy Western world again.G iven the size of its territory a nd population, every change happeni ng to China would seem ingly alarm the whole world. Its hug e demand for energy in recen t years h as unquestionably caused the West to cry foul, claiming that China greedily searches for energy worldwide, pushes up energy prices, threatens the world energy security and causes environmental pollution. This thesis focuses on news reports on the website of The New York Times, representative of W estern media and one of the m ost influential newspapers in America. It has published a series of re ports about China's international energy policy since 2012.The newspaperhas long styl ed itself objective, neutral, and free from the influence of ideology. However, the ubiquitous suppression of ideology in its news reports is revealed at once after a thorough,sp ecific linguistic study on its 11 typical news reports about China's international energy moves. It reminds people of reading news discourse with critical thoughts.Since ideology has been quietly but deeply entrenched into books,TV program s and news reports, peoplewould accept and get influen ced or controlled by a certain ideology even without knowing it.It is hoped that this thesis ca n help readers get to know CDA so that we ordinary people could get ri d of the suppression of the ruling ideology, which is subtly embedded in linguistic texts surrounding us.
