| Billboard,as one of the most authoritative music magazines in the United States,contains a various types of music and the introduction of music chart,which attracts a large number of readers with its relaxed,lively,interesting and strong stylistic features.As a journalist of entertainment news reports,one should not only effectively and objectively convey new entertainment items,but stir up reader's interest.Journalist attempts to increase credibility,establish harmonious relationship between texts and readers by utilizing different language means.This is what we called interpersonal function.In the light of interpersonal function of Systemic-functional grammar,the thesis lays emphasis on the study of English entertainment news from the aspect of mood,modality and modal adjunct,giving a detailed analysis on the proportion and distribution of realization of interpersonal function with the 150 pop-music reports chosen from Billboard,and investigating their features and the way to achieve the realization.It is found that mood,modality,and modal adjuncts are the three main means to realize the interpersonal function.The three systems are independent but also connected to each other.In terms of the mood system,declaratives,as the most direct and effective way to spread information,play a dominate role.Interrogatives rank the second place,and imperatives take up the lowest proportion,employing the irregular sentence pattern,imperatives and interrogatives,can catch readers attention,improve the internal communicative potential,thus increasing the interaction with readers,and having strong appeal.In perspective of modality system,pop-music reports employ more modalization than modulation.In terms of modality value,modal operators with median value take up the highest number,and modal operators with low value come to the second place.The reasonable choice of modal operators and modal metaphors can increase the objectivity and reliability of reports.Modal adjunct is a subcategory of adjunct,which is another major means to realize the interpersonal function.In English entertainment news,mood adjuncts account for much larger proportion compared with comment adjuncts.On the basis of the above results,the three systems to realize interpersonal functions are highly related in English entertainment news reports,and prove that the interpersonal function is applicable in the analysis of real material.Besides,it is conductive to probe into the factors that influence the effect of English entertainment news reports.It is expected that the research can conduce to readers' deep interpretation and clear understanding of realization in such kind of news discourse.At the same time,it can contribute to enrich the research of the theory of interpersonal function. |
