Escape,a poetic and philosophical theme which is a force formed by two kinds of contradictions: status quo and escape in human nature, and it never stops in the thousands of years of human civilization.Whether escape from the geographical space or a brief trance in spirit, escape is the reaction of people's dissatisfaction with reality and the infinite desire for the unknown.Milan Kundera's whole life is accompanied by escape and his own experience is not only one of the reasons for his multilayer thought on the theme of escape, but also has a profound impact on his writing content and narrative techniques.Kundera's novel has experimental and according to escaping from the different circumstances to explore the possibility of existence. In the era without supreme judge, people doubt about the truth and cannot clearly understand self and the world.People attempted to flee form their former position to seek self identity. With the increasing of the unity of the space in modern world and the boundaries between the private field and the public domain are becoming increasingly blurred, which makes a dilemma that people cannot escape from neither the external world nor the inner world. This thesis consists of three chapters besides the preface, conclusion and references. The first chapter quotes the related theory and literatures to expound the concept of existence and escape. Then we do some researches on the inherent philosophical framework of Kundera. In addition, this chapter analyzes the relationship between the theme of escape and existence according to the literatures about oneself and others, contingency and possibility, seriousness and absurdity. Finally, according to escaping through inherence and limitation,we seek for an increase in self existence in order to explore the possibility of the existences of different circumstances and to grasp the existence of self. The second chapter expatiates the concept of identity.Combined with the related theories, this paper analyzes the specific characters and their situations in the literatures, then divides the identity problem in Kundera's works into two categories: the ambiguity of the identity and identity of the exiles. We focus on this problem in identity: the loss of identity and the loss of multiple identity transformation.Besides,we explore the ambiguity of the boundaries between identity and escape, the exile, dislocation and suspension of the absence in identity. Finally,we show the relationship between identity and escape through continuous escape to seek identity. The third chapter is a research from the view of culture. The suspension of truth and morality and the rapid development of science and technology make the change of modern society and cause impact on self. This chapter starts from Kundera's comparison between modern society and eighteenth century civilization: escaping from the material world to the spiritual world and escaping from the modern civilization to civilization of past. Finally, this chapter expresses the rationality of escape according to the introspection of modern society.
