Wise Children is the last novel of the contemporary British female writer Angela Carter, and is also regarded as the most complex and best swan song of hers. This thesis intends to reveal the multiplicity of the theme by way of the theory of deconstruction so as to indicate that Carter's final purpose is to deconstruct patriarchal society and subvert traditional oppression. This thesis consists of six chapters. The first chapter is a brief introduction to Angela Carter and her Wise Children. The second chapter is literature review, which summarizes the literary criticisms and researches of Wise Children both at home and abroad, and draws the conclusion that most of the researches are focused on the narrative style and writing technique of the novel, ignoring the study of the multiplicity of the theme. The third chapter introduces the theoretical basis of deconstruction, focusing on the deconstruction of Logocentrism in it.The fourth chapter, based on Derrida's theory of deconstruction, deeply analyzes the significant themes of society at that time, including carnival life, culture and patriarchal oppression, the problem of legitimacy, and also their chaotic family relations. The fifth chapter explores the role of the pluralistic theme, that is,the deconstruction of the theme of the traditional social oppression and the new social relations constructed by the author.Chapter sixth summarizes the full thesis, revealing the aesthetic ideas and cultural concepts of the author as well as the sociological significance of the pluralistic theme in the novel. |
