National publicity film is a kind of artistic form,which presents the national image through various representation methods.Based on a clear self-positioning,it refines materials in the fields of history,politics,culture,economy,humanity and other aspects and intends to establish a national image and convey ethnic culture through representative lens and verbal signs.At the same time,editing and sound effect will strengthen the visual impact and appeal.From the multimodal perspective,the communicative semiotics employed in the film,like picture,verbal,sound,color etc.,compose the whole dynamic discourse.Within the theoretical framework of conceptual metaphor and intersemiotic complementarity theories taking the National publicity film Enjoy China in Different Ways screened at the Piccadilly Circus in London in 2015 as the research object,this thesis makes an interpretation of multimodal metaphors in it,which mainly focuses on solving the three following questions:1.What are the main types of multimodal metaphors in the NPF of China?2.How do these multimodal metaphors co-construct the discourse meaning via different modes in the NPF of China?3.What are the discourse functions of multimodal metaphors in the NPF of China?The major findings are as follows:1.The main types of multimodal metaphor in the NPF of China are JOURNEY METAPHOR,EMOTION METAPHOR,STAGE METAPHOR,PERSONIFICATION METAPHOR.2.The meaning co-construction of these four types of multimodal metaphors is realized by the intersemiotic complementarity of verbal and picture modes,verbal and color modes,picture and music modes.3.From the perspective of discourse function,these four types of multimodal metaphors help to achieve the discourse cohesion through the synonymy,hyponymy,and thematic progression between different modes,conveying the discourse intentions of enhancingnational self-confidence and establishing international images.Finally,it shapes an image of inclusive,democratic and open,and peacefully rising nation to the international community.Based on the study of National publicity film Enjoy China in Different Ways as the corpus,this thesis explores the meaning co-construction and discourse functions of these multimodal metaphors,which theoretically makes an extension of the research field of multimodal metaphor in National Publicity Films,which will be of great use for the viewers to interpret National Publicity Film of China and the producer's intentions.
