Study On Translator's Subjectivity From The Perspective Of Translation As Adaptation And Selection-Based On Evan King And Shi Xiaojing's English Versions Of Luotuo Xiangzi

The translator is the most active but the most easily neglected subject in the process of translation.In the late 1970 s,“cultural turn” in the translation studies appeared in western translation,which not only explored new filed,but also opened up new space for translation studies.Afterwards,the issue of translator's subjectivity gradually aroused the attention of translation researchers and the study of translator's status followed.But due to late start,research results are relatively few.Professor Hu Gengshen drew lessons from the key concepts of Darwin's theory of evolution,namely,adaptation and selection,established the theory of translation as adaptation and selection and proposed translator?oriented translation.He thinks translation is the result of translator's multidimensional adaptation to and multi?dimensional selection of the translational eco?environment.Translator is restrained by the objective environment in translation process.On the other hand,the translator makes adaptation and selection actively.Under the guidance of translation as adaptation and selection,both translator's adaptation and selection is closely related to translator's subjectivity.With the framework of translation as adaptation and selection,this thesis mainly adopts the methods of inductive analysis,comparative analysis and case study.Firstly,it classifies previous studies on English versions of Luotuo Xiangzi,translation as adaptation and selection and translator's subjectivity,and then it analyzes translator's subjectivity comparatively embodied in the whole translation process with Evan King's and Shi Xiaojing's translated versions of Luotuo Xiangzi as a case study.Evan King's Rickshaw Boy and Shi Xiaojing's Camel Xiangzi are the products of their adaptations and selections in the translational eco-environment.In the option of the text,the two translators make active adaptations to their personal interest,self-value realization,the social circumstances and bilingual competence.In the reconstruction process,they make selections from linguistic dimension,cultural dimension and communicative dimension.As for the linguistic dimension,the two translators interpret the text from lexical level and syntactic level.When it comes to cultural dimension and communicative dimension,translators take cultural differences and the acceptability of target readers into consideration and make proper adjustments.Translator's subjectivity is fully reflected in the whole translation process.
