A Practice Report On The Patent Translation From English To Chinese

During my internship I did some translation of the patent literature and benefit a lot from it.This practice report is an introduction of my translating a piece of patent literature and an analysis of the problems met by me in the process of translation and their corresponding countermeasures and solutions.It is also a summary of my experience about patent translation.The report is made up of five chapters in all.In the first chapter,I firstly introduce the content of the source text,and then analyze its stylistic features and translation requirements.The second chapter describes the whole process of translation,including the preparation of translation,the process of translating,and an analysis of the translating difficulties.The third chapter is a detailed description of the preparation for translation,including the facilities,information texts and translation methods needed for the translation.The fourth chapter is the key one.I select some examples from the target text,analyzing them to find out the translation difficulties and coming up with corresponding solutions based on the translation principles and skills.Firstly,the basic rules of patent translation are discussed,including the analysis of the representative translation subjects such as the title,abstract and claim.Secondly,the vocabulary and terminology used in the patent text is analyzed in detail.Then is a particular discussion about the application of syntactic linearity and division to the translation of the complex and long sentences in the patent text.Finally,the common errors and their respective corrections are summed up for other translators' reference.The last chapter is a summary of the translation practice,with a highlighting of the basic requirements for the patent translation.I have learnt much from this translation practice—a professional understanding of the patent translation and an improvement of my own translation ability.
