Classical Chinese poems,heavily loaded with distinctive features and cultural connotations,are always regarded as treasure of Chinese culture and literature.Hence translating classicalChinese poems into Englishbears the task of promoting Chinese culture and facilitating cross-cultural exchanges and translators are expected to achieve the balance between retaining the original flavor of the poem and making it approachable to readers of a different culture.In the past,scholars used to focus on how to translate ancient Chinese poetry.Now,more and more researches are taking a broader approach to the study of the English translation of classical Chinese poems.The author of this thesis believes that the English translation of Chinese poetry can be viewed from a philosophical perspective.Based on the aesthetic and philosophicalpair of “Being” and “Non-being”,this thesis probes into the recurrence of “Poetry” in the English translation of classical Chinese poems,with reference to The Book of Poetry as a case study.To begin with,the author gives a brief introduction to “Being” and “Non-being”.The aesthetic and philosophical pair of Taoism is applied as the theoretical framework of the thesis.Then,the author looks into the underlyingconnection between the philosophical thought of “Being and Non-being generating each other” and the English translation of classical Chinese poetry.Furthermore,she argues that the comprehension process is aided by “Poetry”,another key term used as a traditional aesthetic category in China.The author makes acomprehensive analysis of the concept of “Poetry” by focusing on its origin,definition and translation,as well as the causes and working mechanism in the English translation of Chinese poems.Finally,some typical examples from various English versions of The Book of Poetry are cited to help analyze therecurring performance of “Poetry” in specific translation practice.“Poetry”mainly recurs in poem translation in two forms,namely,the loss and retention.By investigating the English translation of classical Chinese poetry from the perspective of ancient Chinese philosophy,the thesis has found that translation is practically the transformation and generation of “Being” and “Non-being” and that “Poetry” of a translated poem is gained through a proper integration of “Being” and “Non-being”.Hopefully,the new philosophical and aesthetic approach set up in this thesis can providenew ideas and directions for future researches on ancient Chinese philosophy and studies on the English translation ofChinese classics.
