Study On Translation Of Bank Public Signs From The Perspective Of Functionalist Translation Theory

Accurate C-E bank public signs play important role in publicity to foreign countries,but at present,only several scholars have studied bank public signs translation in China.Born in 1970s,German functionalist translation theory pulls theory closer to translation practice.The most important parts of it are three translation rules.Skopos rule is the highest rule that should be obeyed in all the translation;fidelity rule emphasizes the faithfulness of target texts to source texts;coherence rule requires target texts meaningful in target language culture.This thesis mainly studies the C-E translation of bank public signs in China in the framework of German functionalist translation theory.By referring to various scholars' definitions of public signs and combining the characteristics of bank industry,this thesis defines bank public signs,concludes collected translation errors from aspects of lexicon,grammar and text and analyzes the causes leading to those errors:lack of supervision,cultural difference,lack of translation standard and limited competence of translators both in linguistic and pragmatic.In the end,under the guidance of three major rules of functionalist translation theory,principles for bank public signs translation are proposed:concision,acceptability,consistency.Based on these principles and scholars' research fruits on translation strategies,specific translation strategies are brought up:omission,borrowing,adaption,free translation and standardization.In a word,the survey and research on bank public signs have practical significance.The author hopes this study could make some contributions to bank public signs translation,however,due to limits of research time,linguistic data and the competence of researcher herself as well as the influence of other factors,some deficiencies inevitably exist in this study.
