A Study On The Expatiation Of Corea In The China Discussion

After the failure of the Reform Movement of 1898 in late Qing dynasty,Liang Qichao and his colleagues of the reform group fled to Yokohama and established a Chinese newspaper,The China Discussion(Qing Yi Bao).With the purpose of taking charge of political criticism by scholars,and exploiting people's mind,The China Discussion formed a connecting link between the antecedent newspaper The Current(Shiwu Bao)and the succedent New Citizen(Xinmin Congbao).In virtue of distinctive political ideas and positive ideological enlightenment,The China Discussion boasted significant historical value.The China Discussion contained a vast amount of expatiations about Corea(The Corean Empire).It drew information from domestic and foreign resources,containing both eastern and western countries,which showed a clear cosmopolitan vision.Compared with the previous Chinese scholars'understanding of Joseon Dynasty,there was a great improvement in the covering of Corea in The China Discussion,whether in the breadth of horizon or the depth of discourse.Through the exterior phenomenon of talking about Corea,either explicitly or implicitly,both arguers and editors of The China Discussion conveyed the essence of the great political and national crisis in modern China,and was alert to its future trend.In this way,an urgent introspective consciousness was shown in their expatiations.This thesis illustrates the expatiation of Corea in The China Discussion,by analyzing its form and contents,especially referring to the covering of how Japan and Russia contended in Corea,thereby to judge its historical value and practical significance.It contains an introduction,three chapters in main body and the conclusion.The introduction presents the motivation of choosing this topic,analysis of the theoretical value and practical significance of carrying out this study,and summary of the domestic and foreign research status.Chapter I generalizes the expatiation of Corea in The China Discussion.A brief description is given respectively on the form and content of the expatiation.Chapter II focuses on the covering of Japan's aggression of Corea in The China Discussion.The ideology of Japan's attitude towards Corea and concrete action of its aggression against Corea,through the way of either nibbling away like a silkworm or swallowing like a whale,are discussed separately.Chapter III pays attention to the exposition of Russia's yearning to possess Corea,concerning about the process of Russia's embezzling Corea and the various privileges it seized.In the conclusion,the historical value of the expatiation of Corea in The China Discussion is judged.Its cosmoplitan vision is highlighted,and its limitation and negligence are pointed out objectively as well.
