A corporate mission statement describes a company's core concept and long-term goal with a concise expression,so the translated corporate mission statement has become an important window for English speakers to understand a company. However,at present, the quality of C-E translated mission statements in many enterprises is really poor. This thesis applies Peter Newmark's text typology and communicative translation to analyze abundant C-E translated corporate mission statements of China's top 500 enterprises as examples, before classifying the translation problems into four types:(1)loss in connotation of puns,(2)rote translation with redundant words,(3)under-translation with vague implications,and(4)inconsistent translated versions of frequent Chinese four-character terms. In order to perform the informative and vocative function, four corresponding countermeasures are proposed as:(1)paraphrasing puns with two terms,(2)deleting words of repeated concepts,(3)retaining core information to highlight implications,and(4)following authoritative translated versions.Proved by practice, these four countermeasures are effective to solve the problems in the C-E translation of corporate mission statements, which can also help to improve the translation quality of corporate mission statements for enterprises to establish a good image and achieve a smooth communication between Chinese and English speakers. |
