The E-C Translation Report Of Starting With Hegel: The Explicitation Of The Referential Expressions In The Philosophical Text Translation

This report is based on the E-C translation project of Starting with Hegel conducted by the reporter.The language features of the philosophical text are criticism,comprehensiveness,pluralism and so on.The book includes not only the ideas of Hegel,but also the major thinkers and events that were influential in the development of Hegel's thought.The project has been published by the Heilongjiang Educational Publishing House on August 1st,2017.The requirements of this project are strict,and the understanding level and acceptability of the targeted text readers should also be considered besides the accuracy,preciseness and fidelity.The difficulty in the translation project is the explicitation of the referential expressions,especially the referring meanings of pronouns and referring nouns in certain contexts.Referential expressions have been firstly classified and analyzed:some referring meanings are easily found and understood;others are difficult,which are needed to be put into certain contexts and then explicated through comparison and exclusion.According to the relevance theory,the translation activity is an ostensive-inferential process and the translator can infer the communicative intention of the original author and choose the optimal translation according to the context of the source text and the relevance principle.The explicitation not only refers to the change of language cohesion in the narrow sense,but also the explicit conversion of meaning.So,the translator needs to infer the referential meanings in the context and explicit them properly.Therefore,three translation techniques are employed in the report:literal translation,repetition and conversion.And the translation project also shows that the three ways could be effectively adopted to solve the translating problems.
