Function Of Cognitive Completion In Chinese To English Interpreting

According to the Interpretive Theory of Translation,cognitive completion includes cognitive baggage and cognitive context,which are all imperative to interpreters.Only when interpreters acquire these qualities,can they understand the meaning of the original language.Bilingual language ability is never enough for interpreters to carry out theirinterpreting task successfully,and world knowledge also plays a very important role.There are still a large number of people blaming their language ability for the problems they have while learning interpreting.But they should also know that cognitivecompletion is as important as language ability.The writer took“the 5^th Auto Shanghai Summit”as an example,analyzing the role that cognitive completion has played in Chinese to English interpreting.And the writer also gave some suggestions to enhance interpreters'ability of cognitive completion based on his case.
