Long claimed in his Interaction Hypothesis that Second language acquisition was achieved through language interaction with other conversational interlocutors,especially higher level interlocutors.Swain,in her Output Hypothesis,stated that when learners produce the target language,they have the opportunity to notice and modify their problems.So "notice" and "modify" are the results of production,and the prerequisite of SLA.This research is based on the Long&Swain's theoretical frameworks,laying the focus on the occurrence of noticing and repair in interaction,because these two elements are the key issues for the intake and acquisition in second language learning.How do noticing&repair happen?What kind of role do interlocutors play in the occurrence?This research aims to answer two questions 1)In student-student interaction,when do noticing and repair happen?Who triggers the occurrence of noticing and repair?2)Is there a connection between the occurrence of noticing&repair and the language competence of interlocutors?This research was conducted in the way of class experiment,the subjects were 60 non-English majored undergraduates from Xi'an Polytechnic University.Every two students were matched according to their English level.Their dialogues were recorded,and then transcribed to written materials.Only mistakes of the predicate verbs were studied as the experiment objectives.Before experiments the purpose and procedures were not informed to subjects.The prerequisite was not to affect the fluency of the dialogue,and reducing the interruption as less as possible,only if it was required on their own initiatively.After studying the written materials,all the noticing and repair were spotted in the conversation.Two coordinates were designed and employed to investigate the distribution of noticing&repair.The statistic analysis revealed the pattern of the occurrence of noticing&repair.The SPSS was employed to do the statistic analysis and compare between high-middle level groups and middle-low level groups,and found out how the interlocutors' competence affected the occurrences of noticing&repair.The study result suggested that not all interaction could produce positive effects,the occurrences of noticing&repair were related to the interlocutors'competence.The research result shows according to the timing and initiator,noticing can be classified into five different types:passive pre-noticing;active pre-noticing;passive post-noticing;active post-noticing;no-noticing.The research revealed that not all student-student interaction can produce positive effect.Interlocutor' s language competence determines the occurrence of certain types of noticing.Interlocutor' s competence is in proportion to occurrence of passive noticing,no connection to active noticing,and inversely proportional to no noticing.Interlocutor' s competence is not connected to self-initiated self-repair,inversely proportional to no repair,is in proportion to other three types of repair.
