Encoding phenomenon in memory retrieval was first discovered by Buckner,is mainly refers to the new phenomenon of encoding during the vocabulary test phase.Subsequent studies have found that the memory of new vocabulary under the condition of deep processing to extract is better than the effect of shallow processing,a phenomenon known as memory-for-foils effect. As the phenomenon of memory-for-foils,Jacoby put forward the source-constrained retrieval hypothesis, the assumption that vocabulary in the retrieval phase will be reactivated the cognitive processing mode during the period of learning,if participants studied with different degree of processing methods in the learning phase, then they will use the same cognitive mode as the study phase, thus affecting the memory of new vocabulary.According to the source-constrained retrieval hypothesis, any different level-of-processing conditions of retrieval phase will influence different memory on new words, which be called memory-for-foils effect. In order to provide a better understanding of the generalizability and limitations of source-constrained retrieval hypothesis and memory-for-foils phenomenon, this research studied the interaction of encoding and retrieval from the perspective of the level-of-processing.Experiment 1 examined the impact of different processing conditions of retrieval phase on the new vocabularies in Chinese vocabularies as stimulus materials. Results show that materials in the Chinese lexicon may also affect new encoding, performance for the retrieval of semantic processing under the condition of new words in the process of recognition performance is better than the surface-based processing.Experiment 2 learned tasks for semantic processing, investigates the semantic processing under the condition of different level of processing of retrieval of new encoding. The results showed that under the condition of deep processing of new words is better than shallow processing under the condition of new encoding effect in the process of retrieval.Experiment 3 learned for the surface-based processing tasks, examined the non-semantic processing under the condition of different level of processing of retrieval of new foils. The results showed that the effect was not obvious for "deep" foils over "shallow" foils.Taken together, these results provide support source-constrained retrieval hypothesis and for the idea of a retrieval mode partly, only when the learning task for semantic processing, the retrieval phase will reactivate of the same cognitive processing mode of encoding phase, and then influence the same lists of foils. When learning tasks for the non-semantic processing, the retrieval phase won't be reactivated the same cognitive processing mode of encoding phase, cannot influence the effect of the encoding of the same lists of foils.
