This thesis adopts a genre analysis approach and makes a comparative study on the use of amplifiers in English academic writing by Chinese and native English scholars in economics and management journals. It tries to explore the characteristics of amplifiers used by the Chinese and find the similarities and differences between Chinese scholars and native English scholars in their academic writing. The two corpora employed in this study are composed of 30 English research articles written by the Chinese scholars and 30 written by the native English scholars. The former is considered as the target corpus, and the latter as the contrast corpus.According to the list of amplifiers in Kennedy(2003),the author took 24 amplifiers as the major research data, and then used AntConc to retrieve the frequency of amplifiers and generate the collocate list of amplifiers.By virtue of the Chi-Square Calculator and BFUS Collocator, the author analyzes the similarities and differences between the two corpora. The results show that:generally, the types and tokens of amplifiers and its collocations used by the Chinese scholars are fewer than the native English scholars used.Besides, the Chinese scholars used more amplifiers(such as totally, greatly)or less amplifiers(such as deeply)than the native English scholars in their research articles. Moreover, the Chinese scholars are still unclear about the semantic prosody of amplifiers. Finally, possible reasons for the differences and pedagogical implications are provided.
