Responding To Impolite Utterances

Daily interaction features frequent pragmatic phenomena of politeness and impoliteness.While scholars remained committed to the studies of politeness,they started to pay attention to the study of impoliteness from 1970s and 1980s.Although there are some prominent study results,such as Culpeper' s impoliteness model and Bousfield's impoliteness model,the studies of impoliteness are still insufficient compared with those of politeness.What's more,studies on responses to impoliteness are still limited.Since Sina Microblog has exerted great influence and gained wide popularity,this thesis collects some corpus of responses to impolite utterances.In order to keep the corpus exact and authentic,the author collects some corpus of responses to impolite utterances that happened in the microblogs of some celebrities in recent six years.Based on Bousfield impoliteness model,this thesis analyzes impoliteness phenomena in S:ina Microblog interaction and aims at testifying the application of response options to Sina Microblog impolite utterances.What's more,relevant impoliteness response strategies and the motivation of these impoliteness response strategies will be further identified.Owing to the previous study and elaborate corpus analysis,this thesis can draw the following conclusions:(1)the phenomena of impoliteness not only exist in daily life but also emerge among responses to impolite utterances.(2)Bousfield's impoliteness output strategies can also be applied to Sina Microblog offensive responses and there are large quantities of on-record and off-record impoliteness response strategies.(3)The interlocutors not only use single impoliteness response strategies but also wield combined impoliteness response strategies during Sina Microblog interaction.(4)By utilizing impoliteness response strategies,the interlocutors can realize their intentions,such as releasing negative emotion,confirmation of identity and construction of salient identity.These identities cannot remain unchanged and are constructed during interaction.This thesis attempts to provide a new perspective for study on impoliteness,to help people understand the phenomena of impolite utterances and to make some contributions to harmonious and relaxed internet interaction.
