Under the influence of Belt and Road Initiative,there are more opportunities for its interaction and collaboration with foreign countries.The demand for language talents is higher.Language ability construction is the basic work of Belt and Road Initiative.Researches show communication strategy(CS)is one of the important components of oral communicative competence.Since the 1970 s,many scholars at home and abroad have begun to study the second language communication strategies(CSs).Researches in the field of CSs are always found in oral communication.Most of researches are focused on classifications,influencing factors and empirical study related to CSs.It is noted that many variables can influence the use of oral CSs.However,researches from cultural background on oral CSs are very rare.Especially,there are few researches on the interaction influences on the oral CSs from English proficiency and cultural background.This present study,therefore,aims to explore the influences of English proficiency on the use of oral CSs for second language learners from different cultural backgrounds.The subjects consist of 30 second year of postgraduate students from University of Social Science and Humanities in Warsaw for Erasmus Exchange Program.19 are females and 11 are males,aged between 24 to 25.They come from Western Europe,Eastern Europe and Asia.This thesis aims to solve the following four research questions:1)Is there any significant difference between L2 learners at different English proficiency in terms of oral CS? If yes,what are they?2)Is there any significant difference between L2 learners from different cultural backgrounds in terms of oral CS? If yes,what are they?3)Which factor contributes more to the use of oral CS? Why?4)Is there any significant interaction effect between English proficiency and cultural background on oral CS?Data are gathered in two processes: via questionnaire and semi-structured interview.The participants are divided into high,middle and low level groups basedon their Oxford Placement Test(OPT)scores.The professor in Methods and Techniques of TELF 2 held OPT at the beginning of this course in order to know the students' English level and reasonably group.According to GLOBE research,classification of cultural background is based on the participants' nationalities.The interview was recorded by MP4 and held in the library of Social Science and Humanities University in Warsaw.The audio files of the interview were transcribed,then the data analysis was conducted on the transcription.Major findings of the study are as follows:1)Second language learners at different English proficiency have a significant difference on the use of message reduction and alteration strategy and nonverbal strategies while listening strategy.Students who are in low language proficiency use more message reduction and alteration strategy.Compared with the high proficiency students,middle and low proficient students often use nonverbal strategies while listening strategy.2)Second language learners from different cultural background have a significant difference on the use of nonverbal strategies while speaking strategy,message abandonment strategy and word-oriented strategy.The Western Europeans and Eastern Europeans like to use nonverbal strategies while speaking strategy.On the contrary,Asian like to use message abandonment strategy and word-oriented strategy.3)The influence of English proficiency for the use of oral CSs is slightly bigger than cultural background.The result of interview shows that the reasons include different motivations of learning English and different English competence.4)There is no significant difference of interaction effect between English proficiency and cultural background for using oral CSs in this present study.The finding results of this research can provide some references for improving the communicative competence of second language learners.English teachers can have a systematic introduction to using oral CSs,raising their awareness of using oral CSs.
