A Comparative Study Of Brick Carving Art In Areas Of Jinnan And Jinzhong Shanxi

The art of brick carving is widely used in vernacular dwellings within Shanxi province,among them are Qiao Family Countyard,Wang Family Countyard and Chang Family Garden Compound,Cao Family Countyard,which are the most typical brick carving in Jinzhong area,and also Li's Grand Courtyard,Luo's Grand Courtyard which represent the brick carving of Jinnan area.They belong to the category of Shanxi's regional culture.Both of them are typical representatives of brick carving art in Shanxi Province,and have similar historical development and evolution process and artistic appearance.However,there are still many differences in the decorative patterns,the types of themes,the forms of expression,and the structural parts of brick sculptures in Jinnan and Jinzhong areas.In addition,from the perspective of regional culture,there are different “artistic genes” hidden behind their materialized appearances.Through on-spot investigations,field measurement,taking photo records,the present author collected sufficient first-hand data and information.Also,the present author did lots of interviews and investigations on inheritors of Taigu Jin-style brick carving on behalf of the Jinzhong area—the ideal representation of Lv's brick carving in Hejin on behalf of the Jinnan area.Based on the historical literature documents,the present thesis makes a comparative study of the art of brick carving decoration in Shanxi Jinnan and Jinzhong.The present author firstly sorts out the historical development of brick sculptures in Shanxi,summarizes the changes and developments of brick carving decorative patterns;secondly,he sorts out the geographical location,climate and environment,and the development of humanities and history in Jinnan and Jinzhong areas,and sorts out Its influence on the development of the local brick carving decoration pattern;Finally,by comparing the measured data of specific buildings such as the shadow wall,the land,the taro,the core wall,and the ridge,the author tried to explore the similarities and differences of the brickwork decorative patterns in the different regions of Jinnan and Jinzhong of Shanxi Province.
