This is a translation report based on the author?s translation practice of Critical Terms for Media Studies(Chapter 4,6 and 7).The essays in Critical Terms for Media Studies are grouped into three categories, namely,Aesthetics,Technology and Society. The author translated Chapter 4,“Materiality”,Chapter 6,“Senses” and Chapter 7,“Time and Space”,all of which belong to Aesthetics. There are a lot of long sentences in the source text and the content in each essay is profound and difficult with background knowledge mostly related to philosophy, thus they pose a great difficulty to the author of this thesis. To deal with the long sentences properly, the author first categorizes the source text as informative text according to Katharine Reiss? Typology. As content is the first task of informative text,an accurate and coherent target text is required. The author finds Hans J.Vermeer?s Coherence rule and Fidelity rule would be good principle to guide the translation practice.During the translation, the author chooses different translation techniques in accordance with specific sentence, such as sequential translation, reverse, splitting and combination. The author hopes that this thesis can be helpful in E-C translation of long sentences in similar informative source text, from classifying the text type to the choice of translation principle and translation techniques. |
