This paper first analyzes the conflict of identity of the protagonist in Heart of Darkness from the perspective of history and identity in three aspects:first, the identity of the mysterious Imperial Organization;second, the identity of Marlowe;third,Kurtz's recognition of the mysterious Empire reveals that the root of the conflict lies in the manipulation and domination of the protagonists by the mysterious groups of the Empire, and then it is found that the protagonists have adopted different ways and degrees of resistance. It is concluded that the conflict of identity of the mysterious Empire has important implications for contemporary thought. With the help of identity research, the identity of the protagonist in the text is of great significance in Heart of Darkness. So it is the key understanding of the novel.Previous studies on Heart of Darkness did not really understand the identity of the protagonist, because Conrad adopted an extremely obscure narrative strategy to clarify the identity of the protagonist. From the perspective of comparative literature, the spiritual image and identity of Kurtz is as a suspected masonic member, and in the narration of the text we know that Marlowe is a saint with an uppercase letter which shows that Marlowe may be a consecrated masonic apprentice. From the perspective of textual narration,Conrad,in order to reappear the moral idea of his work, gave Marlowe Buddha's image. To study the true identity of Marlowe, the paper of author combs the image of Buddha of Marlowe, and probes into it from the perspective of identity research.Based on the analysis of the image of Buddha which is rare in English literature, the paper of author analyzes that the foreign ministers of Marlowe's three mudras are deeply related to the inner tolerance of Buddha, such as mudra of fearlessness, mudra of supreme generosity and mudra of meditation.Combined with Hendrik Willem Van Loon's book Tolerance,by the narrator Marlowe's description of the people and boats sailing into African rivers, the moral outlook of text tolerance and its expression presents:Intolerance of laziness, intolerance of ignorance, intolerance of selfishness which reveals that the course of human civilization requires tolerance as the main idea of the law.The paper of author also expounds that the modern thought of intolerance in Heart of Darkness originates from fear which is directly related to the Freemasons in the mysterious society in the text. And Marlowe who returns to the English real life presents himself with the image of Bodhisattva, while in Africa Marlowe appeared as a mysterious masonic apprentice.Conrad used the Freemason board to create Heart of Darkness, and made the overall layout of the whole chapter according to the requirements of the Freemason Board. Each chapter of the text corresponds to the moral system pursued by the Masonic hierarchy.Among them,Grand Hailing Sign of Distress is the expression of the love of masonic brothers."Brotherly Love" "tolerance" and "benevolence" in the text are the basic moral orders of Freemason. The main characters of Heart of Darkness have the character of Freemason. The mysterious society that appears in the text is the Illuminati. At the same time, with the help of the frequency of words in the text and the historical data of Freemasons, the narrative art of Heart of Darkness and the study of moral integration is pushed to a higher level.Marlowe's lies and Kurtz's Terror will be interpreted convincingly in the text. Finally,it is concluded that the text of Heart of Darkness is guided by the masonic drawing board.Conrad, with the help of African experience and various experiences in life, puts the fact image of African life and the masonic image of European colonists, the image of the devil and the Freemason, the materialized image and the masonic image that are all intertwined with each other, and the unusual moral system is expounded in depth with the allegorical materials of masonic symbols. This moral system embodies the three different levels of the Freemasons morals. For Conrad,it is in the form of masonic symbolism that interweaves comments and the work so that the text of Heart of Darkness combines art and morality to the greatest extent.
