As one of the most controversial novels of Jia Pingwa,“Fei Du” has received extensive attention from social circles since it was published,and it instantly became a bestseller.The book also enjoys great popularity abroad.However,the novel is banned for more than ten years because of the special historical background.At the same time,few scholars have been studying the translated version.It is hoped that through this thesis,more attention will be paid to studying the cultural translation studies related to the translated version,and in this way,contribution can be made to enhance the popularity of Chinese culture among western countries.As one of the most famous native-soil writers in Chinese literature field,Jia Pingwa's works contain strong native-soil culture,and culture-loaded terms in Jia Pingwa's works are resourceful.As one of the most important parts in Chinese culture,culture-loaded terms have played a major role in transmitting Chinese culture.Meanwhile,with the rapid development of Chinese politics,economy and culture,the the initiative of “Belt and Road” is accepted by more and more western countries.Besides,there is a “Chinese culture fever” all over the world.Translation as a vehicle of cultural communication plays a very significant role in transmitting Chinese culture.Besides,cultural translation and its related translation studies benefit a lot for acceptance and conveyance of the translated version in target language culture.As a professional translator,Howard Goldblatt's translation of Mo Yan's literature works help Mo Yan win the Noble Prize for literature which enables Chinese literature to go abroad.The thesis is based on the translated version by Howard Goldblatt.Susan Bassnett's cultural translation theory will be adopted as theoretical framework,and Nida's classification of culture will be employed in the thesis too.Comparative analysis,text analysis,descriptive analysis will be used to study the translation of culture-loaded terms in the novel Fei Du.All these methods are combined to study the translation methods and strategies which are used by Howard Goldblatt in the translated version Ruined City.Evidence has been found that strategies and methods he employed in translating the novel Fei Du are very flexible,which are mainly domestication,combining with transliteration,literal translation,paraphrase and omission,and all these methods are combined to try to deliver source cultural information to target language readers,and in this way,Howard Goldblatt has successfully achieved cultural functional equivalence.
