American movie the Grand Budapest Hotel was set in an imaginary country of European continent in the time between the 1930 s and 1960 s where the dutiful concierge Mr.Gustave of the hotel and his lobby boy were involved in a conspiracy that is schemed for scrambling for family legacy. The uniqueness of the movie lies in its four-layered narrating structure, exquisite composition and color employment. The movie is a seemingly light and humorous comedy while it is,in fact, full of insightful meanings. The dissertation aims to argue that the movie adopts metaphorical symbols to represent modern people's complex modernity experience, which includes the nostalgic tendencies emotionally;their moral degradation and social disorder brought by the development of enlightenment;meanwhile it is made clear that it is unfair to totally devalue enlightenment reason and in the movie Gustave and his fellows justify this point with their resolute upholding of the sublime. The main body is composed of three chapters. In the first chapter,it will focus on the the movie's style designing.Director Wes Anderson takes charge of exquisite color, complete four-layered narrating structure and the carefully-dealt lines to show why modern people tend to be nostalgic. In the second chapter,it will attack the personal degradation and social chaos brought by the excessive development of instrumental reason. In the third chapter,it analyzes how Gustave and his fellows fight for benign qualities such as nobleness, integrity and sacrificing spirit to allude to the perseverance of the sublime.
