The image of Gulliver's Travels has been evolving in the process of translation and rewriting, from a political satire to a light children's book.Blank, however, remained the studies as to the trajectory of images of this novel and the reasons for the transformation. This thesis attributes the metamorphoses of its image to poetics, attempting to comprehend the manipulation of images of translated works from the perspective of poetics.First this paper finds out which image Gulliver's Travels takes on in each period by reference to previous studies and works.Next,it analyzes the text differences among translated versions though representative version of each period. Then, this thesis investigates the factors of manipulating and causing these differences so as to understand how text differences and poetics' manipulation transformed its image. The paper analyzes poetics by the social background of each period, which dictates the basic strategies translators would adopt, hence manipulating the production of translated texts.Meanwhile, poetics also manipulates the concepts readers hold towards works of literature.Through the analysis of translation versions at each period,it is found that there exist enormous differences in the versions translated at different periods, such as translation strategies, emphasis of translation, translation genres and translation purposes. The metamorphosis of the images of Gulliver's Travels matches the poetics in each period.Manipulated by the poetics in each period, translators would adopt corresponding strategies so as to go with the poetics and to increase the acceptance of the work, for instance, whether to emphasize the allegorical nature or stress the satirical quality of Gulliver's Travels. The texts rewritten in accordance with the predominant poetics in each period would be best noticed and accepted, determining the image of translated works,in other words, how readers consider the works translated. This thesis contends that the different poetics at each period contributed to the metamorphosis and transformation of images of Gulliver's Travels.
