Lexical Cohesion In Economic And Trade Text And Its Translation

Cohesion is an important device of forming coherent texts.It has five main types: reference,substitution,ellipsis,conjunction and lexical cohesion.Among them,lexical cohesion,achieved by means of vocabulary,put vocabularies with semantic relations together to form discourse with semantic coherence.Translation activities involve interchanges of both languages.Thus,as translators,we must have a profound understanding of the lexical cohesive devices in source language and target language,especially having a good understanding and skillful application in cohesive devices of the source language,so that the cohesion of translation is natural,compact and coherent.Based on Halliday and Hassan's cohesion theory,the thesis probes into differences of English lexical cohesion and Chinese lexical cohesion,as well as application of lexical cohesion in the translation of economic report text with analyzing “World Trade Report 2015”.Firstly,the thesis makes explanation for lexical cohesion theory;secondly,it describes and analyzes lexical repetition,synonym or near-synonym and antonym in a systematic way;lastly,it discusses the translation strategies of economic report text by analyzing specific translation examples.The thesis mainly has three findings:Firstly,there are differences in lexical cohesion devices of the English and Chinese economic report texts.English favors hypotaxis and the cohesion between words is very overt.It exposes the logical relations between statements by frequently using repetition,synonym or near-synonym and antonym,etc.On the contrary,Chinese is featured by parataxis with implicit cohesion.In order to sort out its logical relations,it is necessary to figure out the inherent relations.Secondly,these lexical cohesion devices mainly include lexical repetition,synonym or near-synonym,antonym cohesion and complementary cohesion in this economic report text.At the same time,the text uses the immediate cohesion and remote cohesion.Among the lexical cohesive devices,lexical repetition,antonym cohesion,synonym or near-synonym and are immediate cohesion occupy first place;remote cohesion comes second;complementary cohesion comes third.Thirdly,different lexical cohesion devices may use the same translation strategy in the process of translation.The common translation strategies include direct repetition,amplification and ellipsis.Of course,on account of professional economic report text,we not only understand the specific usage of lexical cohesive devices in the text,but also analyze the translated English text in the process of translation.
