Abstract/Summary:
This report is summarized on the basis of the translation programs,which are commissioned by an educational consultancy company and Center of Master of Interpretation and Translation(MTI),School of Foreign Languages of Beijing Institute of Technology(BIT).With Halliday’s theory of interpersonal grammatical metaphor as the guidance,the report analyses the linguistic features of the popular science text and the phenomina of interpersonal metaphors in it,offering various practical translation strategies.According to Halliday’s theory of system-functional linguistics,the interpersonal functions can be achieved through mood system and modality system in English.Thus,the interpersonal grammatical metaphors can be divided into modality metaphor and mood metaphor,and the latter can be further divided into indicative mood metaphor,interrogative mood metaphor and imperative mood metaphor.By the analysis of the translation practice of popular science text,the author finds that the above-mentioned types of metaphors can be easily found,and then compares the translation both in congruent form and in metaphorical form,offering various practical translation strategies.Last but not least,this report summarizes the advantages and limitations of the application of Halliday’s theory into the translation of popular science text and expects to provide practical translation strategies for the translation of English-Chinese popular science text as well we a new perspective for future systematic study of its translation theory.
