Incidental vocabulary acquisition through reading is one of the most effective methods besides intentional vocabulary acquisition to acquire vocabulary.Reading is the main way for incidental vocabulary acquisition.Due to the importance of vocabulary and the universality of reading in the second language learning,incidental vocabulary acquisition through reading become the focus of second language acquisition research.Glosses as a commonly used aid in English reading can help students acquire incidental vocabulary effectively.Many scholars at home have done a lot of studies on the effects of the glossing language,way and location on learners' incidental vocabulary acquisition in reading.However,most of the research studies are about Chinese English learners,and very few are related to minority English learners,especially related to Mongolian English learners?This status provides an opportunity for this study.On the basis of Comprehensive Input Hypothesis,Noticing Hypothesis,and Depth of Processing Hypothesis,this thesis aims at exploring these three research questions:(1)Do Mongolian and Chinese glosses have different effects on Mongolian college students' incidental vocabulary acquisition through English reading? Which gloss exerts a positive effect on the incidental vocabulary acquisition through English reading for the Mongolian college students?(2)Do Mongolian and Chinese glosses have different impact on retaining the effects of Mongolian college students' incidental vocabulary acquisition through English reading? Which gloss is better to retain the effects of Mongolian college students' incidental vocabulary acquisition through English reading?(3)Single and multiple-choice glosses,which one is better to acquire and retain the effects of incidental vocabulary acquisition through English reading for Mongolian college students? Gloss language(Mongolian gloss;Chinese gloss)and gloss type(single gloss;multiple-choice gloss)are two major factors in this study.60 Mongolian college students who are majoring in English from two parallel classes in the second grade of the Hohhot University for Nationalities participate in three independent immediate vocabulary tests,delayed vocabulary tests,questionnaire and interview.The result shows that in the immediate test,Mongolian and Chinese glosses have different effects on Mongolian college students' incidental vocabulary acquisition through English reading;Mongolian gloss exerts a positive effect on the incidental vocabulary acquisition through English reading for Mongolian college students than Chinese.In the delayed test,Mongolian and Chinese glosses still have different impact on retaining the effects of Mongolian college students' incidental vocabulary acquisition through English reading.Mongolian gloss is better to retain the effects of Mongolian college students' incidental vocabulary acquisition through English.Single gloss is better to acquire and retain the effects of incidental vocabulary acquisition through English reading for Mongolian college students.The results of this research not only provide suggestions for the Mongolian college students to effectively acquire English vocabulary and improve their comprehensive English level,but also provide an effective reference and inspiration for the compiling of Mongolian college English textbooks for Mongolian students.
