The Sound and the Fury is one of the representative works of William Faulkner, who is a famous American modernist writer. As a classical novel of Stream of Consciousness,The Sound and the Fury is viewed as one of the most difficult work to interpret.Li Wenjun is a celebrated Chinese translator, and he is also an expert in Faulkner study. His translation version of The Sound and the Fury has always been regarded as classics.Based on Pierre Bourdieu?s field-habitus theory, this study plans to investigate Li?s translation of the novel and his subjectivity showed in the paratext from The Sound and the Fury through case study and close reading. This thesis contains five parts, namely the introduction, literature review, theoretical framework, analysis of Li Wenjun?s subjectivity in the paratext from the Sound and the Fury, and conclusion. The introduction part contains three sections, which are research background and significance, research questions and methodology, and structure of thesis. In literature review, introduction to The Sound and the Fury and its author William Faulkner are presented. Then previous studies of Li Wenjun?s The Sound and the Fury and application of field-habitus theory at home and abroad are also contained in this part.Theoretical framework is composed by Bourdieu and his sociological theory, the definition and characteristics of field and habitus, relationship between field and habitus, and introduction to translator?s subjectivity. In the fourth chapter, the formation of Li Wenjun?s subjectivity under the influence of field and habitus and the way Li?s subjectivity influences his application of paratext in Contemporary Chinese Literary Field are demonstrated together. Conclusion part offers a summary to the whole passage, including major findings, limitations and suggestions. The study shows that field and habitus influence and complement each other.Specific habitus is formed in specific field, and specific field is created by specific habitus.Under the impact of habitus, translator tends to choose correspondent strategies in translation. In Contemporary Chinese Literature Field, translator Li Wenjun employs paratext to promote the translation and propagation of The Sound and the Fury.A series of translation strategies applied in Li?s translation, such as adding preface, adopting footnote, employing literal translation and writing relevant literary critics, indicate the function of Li?s subjectivity in translation. The paratext he adopted has lowered the difficulty of reading and prompted the propagation of the novel.
