| Firearms were seen as blessings in early North American colonies, given their importance in defense and in winning the War of Independence.Yet many people now consider private ownership of firearms to be the greatest cause of gun violence in modern American society.Gun control proponents and opponents have been struggling to substantiate their claims for years. This thesis aims to explore the modern gun problem in America from cultural, judicial and political perspectives. The findings that America has a centuries-old tradition of keeping and bearing arms, the trend of the interpretation of the Second Amendment is shifting toward emphasizing individual rights,a lack of scientific evidence to prove the efficacy of gun control laws, and the withering public and political support for gun control have all contributed to the current gun control dilemma. Thus,it is possible to conclude that comprehensive gun bans will no longer be an effective strategy and gun control is an ongoing mission that cannot be achieved within a short time. |
