Teaching is a very complex process, with the interaction of cognitive, affective and behavioral factors. As what teachers believe decides what they do,the teacher beliefs are usually seen as the most important part in the three factors. In the past decades, researchers have been paying more attention to teacher beliefs than their external factors.Meanwhile,in the English teaching as a foreign language, teacher beliefs have been discussed and explored deeply both abroad and at home. But most studies focus on the college English teacher beliefs;in comparison, studies on senior high school English teacher beliefs are scarce. Therefore,it is necessary to research the senior high school English teacher beliefs. This case study aims to explore what kind of beliefs two senior high school English teachers hold and to investigate teacher beliefs and the corresponding behaviors in the classroom. The study lasted for two months by applying the qualitative and quantitative research methods.Three questions are addressed:(1)What are the general beliefs that the senior high school English teachers hold with regard to English teaching?(2)What is the relationship between the teacher beliefs and their classroom practice? Are they consistent or not?(3)What factors cause the consistency or inconsistency between teacher beliefs and their actual classroom practice? The research instruments include: questionnaire, interview and classroom observation. The research indicates that there is no high degree of correspondence between teacher beliefs and their classroom practice. The corresponding answers to the research questions are as follows:(1)Ms.Yang holds the beliefs that the nature of language learning is to speak out what you want to say and put it into practice. In English teaching, teacher's main work is teaching students knowledge and students should participate in all kinds of classroom activities;Ms.Li holds the beliefs that the nature of language teaching is to use language to solve the practical problems in the communicative process. In English teaching, teachers arefacilitator and consultant and students are the independent explorers.(2)Teacher beliefs interact with their classroom practice. They are closely linked with each other.Sometimes, there are consistencies between teacher beliefs and classroom practice. But sometimes, they are inconsistent. The teachers hold the current teacher beliefs, while they may act differently from what they believe.(3)Through the interview of two English teachers and some students, the author found that the school leaders affect the teacher's classroom practice. And the social perspective of students' parents affect the teachers' classroom practice. For a novice teacher, the reason why teacher beliefs are inconsistent with classroom practice is because that the novice teacher has less experience. This situation can be changed by teacher's training. For an experienced teacher, the reasons are the influence of exams, job burnout and so on.
